I was lucky enough to be able to travel to New Orleans during Thanksgiving, 2013 and came back inspired by the City’s culture, fanfare and love of colour and decoration. When I stumbled upon this amazing decorative Art Nouveau styled paper and an unpainted plaster mask in my stash of embellishments, an idea for a hat started to take shape. Revel is the result!
(Model: Pauline Hanzel)
A matte black satin hat forms the base of this design and the decorative paper was torn into strips and decoupaged on the stand of the hat. The image of a joyously dancing lady of the 1920’s or 30’s graces the crown of the hat. The hat band has been created using black satin ribbon, harlequin printed grosgrain ribbon and narrow black trim. The harlequin ribbon and some black grosgrain ribbon form jaunty bows at the back of the hat. Narrow black trim also finishes the edge of the crown of the hat.
The plaster mask has been hand painted to resemble a clown and black pleated trim forms his neck ruff. Yellow, black and red feathers and yellow crystals add the final festive and dramatic touches to tie the colour scheme and theme of this piece together.
Flat black elastic forms a strap for a secure fit and can be placed either behind the wearer’s head or under the chin.
