Awwww, isn’t she cute…..and just a little creepy! Another piece with Bombshell Revival Designs’ signature style stamped all over it – feminine with just a bit of creepy weirdness thrown in.
She is now the third in a series of fascinators I have made using wonderful wooden Halloween ornaments. Her name is Lydia, which pays homage to the young lady of the same name from Tim Burton’s movie Beetlejuice.
The overall size of the ornament was right for a focal point on a headpiece but, as before, the three dimensional size of the head posed a problem for mounting it to the side of a hat or fascinator base. As well, the smaller size of the body and feet does not allow for attaching it upright on a hat form or base. This time I decided to try something different and mount the ornament to a large bow and place it on a headband instead of a clip or comb like the last two.
In order to add feminine details and a bit more character to the ornament, I added a black velvet bow to her mohawk, some frilly lace to her dress, a heart shaped mouth to her smile and lashes to her big expressive eyes. The main bows of this design were made using a wired black and cream stripe ribbon and another slightly smaller bow in an acid green for an extra element and further cohesion to the colour scheme of the design. The same green ribbon was used to form a second bow to finish off the back of the piece. I did not add any veiling, tulle or feathers to keep the design clean and graphic and to ensure that focus remained on the ornament. I decided to give her a bit more character with the added features. The headband that Lydia and her bows are mounted to is wrapped in black satin ribbon and has some flexibility for the wearer’s comfort (no pinching behind the ears!).
Lydia is a fun and dramatic piece which is sure to elicit second looks, comments and hopefully some admiring glances.
