Now that the new year is officially under way, it is time for me to start planning and getting ready for upcoming shows and events that I will be participating in this spring/summer. One of the more exciting endeavours that I have been invited to be part of is a May fashion show being held in Ottawa.
I was approached at one of my fall shows by another designer who has organized and participated in this show for the past five years. They were on a search for new and unique talent to add to the show for 2015 and when they discovered me and my work, they were very excited and invited me right away to contact them if I was interested. A chance to do a collection of whatever I wanted and to show it in a fashion show atmosphere? As if I would NOT be on board!!!!
I have confirmed my participation in the show and am now waiting for further details as the date gets closer. I will, of course, provide firm details regarding the show as they are made available to me so that anyone who wishes to attend the show can do so. So far, I know that it is Saturday, May 30, 2015 and will be held at Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts here in Ottawa.
As for my collection, I have decided what I will be showing – upcycled wedding dresses! My reworking of my own wedding dress is such a hit with everyone who sees it and it made me realize that perhaps there is a market out there for taking someone’s wedding dress and making it over into a fresh and newly wearable piece of art. I am not sure yet if there will be an actual theme to the collection (i.e. nature, fairytale, rock and roll etc.) but, I have purchased some fabrics with the intention of using them in the collection and will be showing my own wedding dress makeover with some new accessories as part of the collection. I will be creating anywhere from five to seven dramatic and somewhat theatrical looks for the show.
I am now on the hunt for wedding dresses, and even prom or other formal type dresses, to use as the base for the collection. If anyone knows of someone who is looking to part with their wedding dress or prom dress for a nominal fee or even for free (how generous would that be!!??), please let me know. I have done some research and the negative parts of my idea for this collection are the cost and sourcing the dresses. Most used wedding dresses that are for sale are out of my reach budget wise as former brides, understandably, are looking to recoup some of the cost of their dress. I will also be scouring the thrift stores and Value Village to see what I find there. So far, the dresses are not as plentiful as I would like and I will have to wait for a 50% off sale at Value Village to pick up a few.
This will be the first collection at a fashion show for Bombshell Revival. Wish me luck on this exciting and new adventure and if anyone out there can be of any assistance to me, please let me know. Your support and assistance is, as always, greatly appreciated.
