As a designer, I am quickly becoming known for a certain signature feature – back detail!!!! I have always been fascinated by and excited by garments and accessories that contain some kind of embellishment, imagery or interest on the back. It features in my own work 100% of the time. Sometimes, I start a piece by designing the back first and then carrying the theme, colours and materials to the front of the garment. The back of a garment can be very important.
What part of the bride’s gown the wedding guests are staring at when the ceremony is taking place? The back!
What part of a red carpet gown is photographed just as much, if not more, as the front? The back!
Everyday clothing items can also be made less generic with the simple addition of a cut out or corsetry.
A simply black or white t-shirt becomes more than a basic to pair with jeans when a back detail is incorporated.
Shoes and booties with heel décor can add even more sexy to the already erogenous ankle and foot.
One of my favourite designs of all time, Alexander McQueen was infamous for his tailoring and innovative and creative designs but, he was also know for the backs of his designs also eliciting awe and gasps from the audience during his runway shows.
As much as I love fashion for women, men’s fashion holds a very special place in my heart. It must be that whole rock star and rebelliousness thing that flows through my blood. I have numerous male style mavens whom I hold in high regard and of those is Mr. Pharrell Williams. He is one of the most photographed, followed and respected style icons in the world and is no stranger to understanding the impact the back of your person can make.
Let me leave you with one more thing to ponder. As important as one’s entrance is, the impression left when exiting can be even more mind blowing.
