Dark Side

April 2, 2013 By kym Leave a Comment

This piece is one of my latest creations and is from my personal collection.  It is feminine, romantic and soft and yet the black leather and silk human skull image on the back add a dark edge to the design.   The title “Dark Side” for this design seemed a perfect fit to the piece and its owner.

The jacket is an upcycled creation and the main fabric of the piece is leather.  The center front, collar and sleeves edges of the jacket already had amazing braid, trim and military like tabs to them.  I have enhanced the collar, sleeve edges and top and bottom of the back applique with metal pieces that have scroll work and keyhole detailing.  The military tabs at center front and at the hemline of the sleeves have been finished with pewter toned metal buttons.  Charcoal satin, soft taupe, dusky pink and black organza rosettes, small ribbon roses and ribbons of tulle and netting have been used as epaulets on the shoulders of the jacket as well as on the back of the jacket to add further drama, texture and detail.  Metal studs, pearls, rhinestones and Swarovski crystals add sparkle and lustre to the embellishments.

Strange New World

This is a second steampunk horror themed hat created by me after the successful reaction to and sale of my initial piece of this genre titled  Elizabeth (June, 2012).  This new hat is again based on the imagining of a post-apocalyptic world where abandoned and found objects have been used to create fashion and accessories for its survivors.  It would be a strange new world indeed.
This piece also uses a doll’s face but with the addition of the doll’s arms as well.  The hat form was covered with dark brown and plum silk fabrics and the same brown and plum tones were used throughout the piece in the tulle and ribbons.  Acid green, rust and orange shades were also added to the colour palette in the hat band ribbon and the feathers.  Some small hits of black were also used to ground and anchor the piece.
Steampunk gears, screw head brads, found objects and the drinking/wetting tube from inside the doll’s body were used to solidify this piece’s theme and to embellish the hat and doll’s face.
This hat has an elastic attached to be worn either under the wearer’s chin or behind at the base of the head.

Madame Butterfly

This upcycled denim jacket has a kimono styling with a hemline that end in points with mitred corners, which gives the finished design a very artistic feel.  The sleeves are full length and the neckline is collarless.  This jacket has no closure and is meant to be worn open.  The jacket has been upcycled with the addition of teal and orange background asian brocades along the neckline, sleeve hemlines and the teal has been further used as fan shaped appliques on the back of the jacket.  Gold metallic ribbon trim further defines the neckline, sleeves and back appliques.
A Geisha inspired image on the back of the jacket has been accented with fabric flowers in shades of orange and metallic gold trim.  The fabric flowers have been further embellished with turquoise and gold beads, orange-gold pearls and mother of pearl orange gold discs.  Three flowers have as well been added to the front neckline of the jacket.  The beads in the flowers accent the seams joining the orange and teal brocades on the neckline. The back of the jacket also has fan shaped, teal brocade appliques, which are also edged with the gold metallic trim.
Dry clean only.
